Oxalic acid is a colorless columnar crystal, easily soluble in water but insoluble in organic solvents such as ether. Oxalic acid starts to sublimate at 100°C, rapidly at 125°C, heavily at 157°C, and begins to decompose. It can react with bases and can undergo esterification, acylhalogenation, and amidation reactions. It can also undergo reduction reaction and decarboxylation reaction by heat. Oxalic acid anhydrous has hygroscopic properties. Oxalic acid can form water-soluble complexes with many metals.
